Cloth Diapers 201: Help! My diapers are stained

As baby grows and changes, you may encounter substances that stain your cloth diapers from time to time. Certain foods, such a blueberries, or other substances you or your little one ingest (like medications or vitamins) can affect the color of the output.

We get lots of questions here at Cotton Babies about how to deal with stains.

Our first recommendation is to bleach your cloth diapers once a month. We recommend 1/4 cup of bleach added to the hot wash cycle if you have a high efficiency machine. You may use up to 1/2 cup of bleach if you have a traditional top-loading machine. This helps to sanitize your diapers and fight odors. Some customers like to add an additional rinse cycle when they bleach to ensure the diaper is thoroughly rinsed before it touches baby's bottom again.

If your stains don't come out with bleach, or if you prefer a more natural stain removal solution, we recommend sunning your diapers.
To sun the diapers:
After completing all your wash cycles, find a safe, sunny spot outdoors if possible.
Place diapers on a drying rack or other flat surface with the inside of the diaper facing the sun.
Let the sun work it's magic to dry and sanitize your diapers.

Some customers have success sunning indoors during the winter near a window. With modern windows that block UV rays, indoor sunning is usually less effective than outdoor.

Some stubborn stains make take more than one round in the sun to be completely removed.

This Just In: Change 3 Things materials

Earlier this week we shared with you the Change 3 Things Challenge for 2011. The goal is to have 100,000 parents committed to change at least 3 diapers a day. We believe 3 diapers is a manageable goal for that almost any parent can do.

To assist you as you share the benefits of cloth diapering with others, we've created some promotional materials. We've created a t-shirt and a silicone band that you can wear. Our hope is that these materials serve as conversation starters.

We also have designed Change 3 Things Share Cards with some quick facts that you can hand out to those who ask you about the benefits of cloth diapering.

The card asks: Did you know?
  • One baby contributes at least 1 ton of waste in diapers alone to a local landfill.
  • Disposable diapers are the third most common consumer product in landfills today.
  • A disposable diaper may take up to 500 years to decompose.
  • A family can spend $1500 to $2000 or more on disposable diapers by the time the baby has moved on to potty training.
Cards are available in a pack of 250 for $10.00 We are selling these cards at cost, as we have many requests for printed material that customers and cloth diaper educators can give out when asked about the benefits of cloth diapers.
We also are providing "Change Kits" with some of your favorite Cotton Babies cloth diapering products, packaged in multiples of three with a free silicone gift included. Great for yourself or to give as a gift to a friend who is curious about cloth diapering. All Change 3 Things products can be found..

Don't forget to join the challenge by clicking "Like" on the Facebook page. Share your story of cloth diapering and how you are sharing the benefits of cloth diapering with your family and friends by posting on the Change 3 Things wall.

Newborn Picks

So I am LOVING cloth diapering a newborn. He is now 4 weeks old. I have a lot of my first son's diapers saved but we started with a diaper service so the diapers I had are still too big on my newbie! Plus there are so many fun diapers out there that I needed to try! I consider him a business expense - to try out all my new products!

So Netanel was born Jan 17 weighing in at 7 lb 4 oz - perfect size! But he was also too small for some of the diapers that should fit a newborn. Plus we had the umbilical cord issue - what would fold down and not rub on it. So I'll share my faves!

Lil Joeys are awesome for newborns! They're a bit pricey, I agree. But they really fit perfectly. They're designed for 5-12 lb. We used them from the beginning, as they have a fold down for the umbilical cord. Plus they still fit great a month later, and I except to get at least another month or so use out of them. To top it all off, my 2 year old's favorite diaper is Rumparooz Ladder 6 - so now he has matching diapers with his little brother!

Tini Fits are also designed to fit 5-12 lb. They don't have the umbilical cut out and they were a bit big initially, but we love them now, at 4 weeks. Plus they're stuffable like a pocket!

FuzziBunz Perfect Size in XSmall is another great fit. I love pocket diapers in general as you can stuff them with extra absorbancy, which I've needed to do. Plus if you snap them all the way to the center, at the smallest setting, it pulls down the middle to clear the umbilical cord.

Kissaluvs fitteds in a Size 0 are a well-known favorite for newborns. They fit great, snap down in front and are trim. To go over it I used a Thirsties XSmall cover which fits great. I started with a Bummis Newborn Super Brite but he's basically outgrown that by now - except for very trim diapers. But it doesn't work over prefolds anymore.

Prefolds are also a great newborn option. They're economical, absorbant, and you can customize the fit. They are a bit bulky but fit fine under a onesie or stretchie. Babies look cute with a bubble butt! For overnight diaper changes I like Bummis Whisper Pants - you dont have to deal with pinching and tucking the prefold into a cover. They're not cute, but when you're bleary-eyed in the middle of the night, you just pull it up and you're done!

bumGenius XS All-In-One are also a great, easy newborn diaper option.

And coming soon are GroVia's newborn organic All-In-Ones! Can't wait to try it!

What's your favorite newborn diaper??

Change 3 Things: 3 cloth diapers. One planet. Big impact.

Today, we are unveiling our 2011 cloth diaper awareness campaign, Change 3 Things. In an effort to promote general consumer awareness of cloth diapering, we have set some big goals for 2011.

Our goals:
  • 100,000 parents committed to change 3 cloth diapers per day.*
  • 30-50 million pounds of prevented landfill waste*
  • 100 million disposable diapers not purchased.*
  • $24 million of combined savings for participating families**
How do I join?
  • Click "Like" on the Change 3 Things Facebook page.
  • Share the page with your friends on Facebook, Twitter and the blogosphere.
  • Change 3 cloth diapers per day.
Why three diapers?
We are busy parents too and really appreciate achievable, manageable goals. Changing three cloth diapers a day is something that almost any parent can do (stay at home or working).

Do my 3 cloth diapers per day really matter?
Yes, it matters! When I get calls from mainstream media, one of the first questions they ask is "how many people use cloth diapers?" This has been true with every major parenting publication and news organization (including Time Magazine) that I've ever spoken with. It's next to impossible to answer that question because we don't know. This not only gives us a way to answer that question but it also gives us a way to measure how many cloth diapers are being used every day. Is it perfect? No, but it's a start.

How does it really change me?
Every cloth diaper saves about $.25 (depending on what brand of disposables you buy). If you save $.75 a day, it may not seem like much, but those three diapers can save you approximately $260 over the upcoming year. In addition to the savings per diaper, you can save yourself time, money and gas for those emergency trips to the store when you run out of diapers.

As parents, we know how frustrating it is to do those repetitive tasks like dishes, laundry, picking up toys, and changing diapers only to turn around and do it again a short time later. By joining the Change 3 Things revolution, you can take one of those repetitive tasks and turn it into an opportunity to create lasting impact that your two year old can’t undo in five minutes.

Building a foundation of accomplished goals makes us feel we can achieve more. The Change 3 Things campaign is a great place to start and could set in motion habits that build your confidence, empowering you to revolutionize your family.

How does it change my baby?
By using cloth diapers, you choose everything that touches your baby’s skin. Additionally, you could brighten baby’s future by applying the financial savings of cloth diapering towards their education…$0.75 a day in a savings account adds up quickly.

Does it really change the entire planet?
Did you know it could take as much as 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose? That’s right, disposables YOU once wore could be … still out there, full of well, you know. One baby in disposables could contribute as much as one ton of waste to a local landfill! Your participation in this revolution of change could prevent the disposal of as much as 55 million pounds of waste.

Want to spread the news?
We've created a t-shirt and a silicone band that you can use to promote cloth diapering and just exactly how much GOOD cloth diapering families are going to do for our environment and for our economy this year. At Cotton Babies, when you purchase one of our "Change Kits", the silicone band is included for free. T-shirts are only $5. The silicone bands are $1. Buy 1 or buy 100... you pick.

Who is behind this?
The Cotton Babies brands (bumGenius, Flip and Econobum) are sponsoring this event. We are inviting retailers, manufacturers, non-profit groups, doulas, nurses, hospitals, pediatricians, chiropractors... anybody who shares our goal of reducing waste and and promoting cloth diapers to share this information with their customer. We've intentionally designed this to be all about you.

Working together, we really can change the world.

* Numbers are approximate and based on information published in the Environmental Agency's Science Report SC010018/SR2.
** Based on approximately $0.25 per disposable diaper NOT purchased by participants because they chose to change a cloth diaper instead.

Cloth Diapers 101: Drying Diapers

We get a lot of questions about how to dry diapers. Many of you want to know more specifics about how to safely dry your diapers, especially during the cold, damp winter months. Our basic instructions are "Line-dry covers and diaper shells. Tumble dry inserts, fitteds and prefolds."

Making sure to dry your diapers completely is the key to avoiding mold and other issues. However, too much time in a dryer or too high of a temperature setting can degrade the elastic, PUL and hook and loop on your cloth diapers. It's a fine line that can sometimes seem tricky. To make it easier for you, we're breaking down the tips according to type of diaper.

Pocket style cloth diapers like bumGenius 4.0:
Since pocket style diapers have a PUL outer and a thin layer of stay dry material, like suede cloth, we recommend line drying the covers, especially if they have hook and loop closures.
Inserts can be tumbled dry on a medium setting.

AIO style diapers with a pocket and hook and loop closure, like bumGenius 3.0 AIOs:
It's very difficult to get AIO diapers dry without a tumble cycle. At the same time, you don't want to over dry the diapers and risk losing elasticity, delaminatating PUL or ruining hook and loop. For best results, we recommend turning the diaper inside out before placing it in the dryer, to help the absorbent inner layers to dry. Because of the hook and loop closure, you do not want to use a high temperature to dry these diapers. We recommend drying them on a low setting for as long as necessary to avoid issues with the hook and loop. You can also add wool dryer balls to help wick away the moisture and lessen the dry time for this style of diaper.

AIO diapers without a pocket, like bumGenius Elemental or bumGenius Newborns:
Very similar to the bumGenius 3.0 AIOs, except you cannot flip these diapers inside out to shorten drying time. If you have a diaper with snaps, you can tumble these on medium. If you have hook and loop closure, you need to tumble them on low. Again, adding wool dryer balls may help to lessen your dry time.

It is important to remember to make sure your diapers are completely dry before storing them or putting them back into your diapers.

Megan, a Cotton Babies customer, said:
"I bought these to try out as an overnight diaper. I started cloth diapering about 6 months ago and had only used an expensive hybrid diaper. I was hesitant to venture out of my comfort zone ( I had only ever used the hybrids and wasn't excited about trying any other cloth diapers) But the ones we were using always leaked at night no matter what I did, so I decided to try these because even if I hated them I had only paid $15 for two covers and 3 prefolds. And I am happy to say that I LOVE them. I bought them just to use overnight and now I find myself reaching for these every time I change my sons diaper. Needless to say, I will be buying more, and I don't have to feel guilty about how much they cost!"
The Econobum Buy 1, Get 1 Free deal ends Monday, February 28, 2011.

Real Mom Talk: Lost That Lovin' Feeling?

Disclaimer: Today on the blog we are talking about sex. If you have children who can read and don't want to have an awkward conversation, we recommend reading this with some privacy. We're addressing this issue today because it was a highly requested topic last fall when Cotton Babies customers suggested topics for Real Mom Talk.

Previously, we've discussed in Real Mom Talk about some of the physical changes that occur in our bodies post birth. Today, we're going to discuss a bit about how to deal with the psychological changes.

In those early baby days, you battle sleep deprivation, delivery recovery, trials of breastfeeding and more. Your body may feel like a battleground. You feel pulled in multiple directions, especially if you have more than one child, and we're not even counting housework.

If you are lucky, after a few weeks you begin to feel as if you might be finding a new routine. Then, out of nowhere, it's time for the 6 week post-partum doctor's visit. The doctor gives you the "green light" with a wink and a knowing smile and maybe you groan internally, knowing something else was just added to your to-do list.

Now, I know that's not the case for everyone, but with the informal research I've done, I know it's fairly common. I also know it's not something many moms like to talk about. As women, we also want healthy relationships, and we all know that takes work in a lot of different areas.

When my daughter was born, I found myself with four children, three years and under and living in a multi-family, multi-generational household, including my in-laws. Some very wise women gave me some of the best advice regarding my marriage, and I'm going to share it with you as a pre-Valentine's Day treat.

Simply put, I had to change the way I thought about our sexual relationship. Our family had changed, my body had changed, it only makes sense this aspect of our relationship had changed too.

I had to stop thinking of my husband as yet another person demanding my attention and wanting to touch me. Stop thinking of sex as just a way to have children. Stop thinking it had to be spontaneous like in our newlywed, no baby days. I had to choose to think of sex as the gift only I could give him. He chose me. He asked me to marry him. I said "I do", and this is an exclusive part of my marriage.

The other thing those wise women shared with me was that when you have young children, you have to plan for sex. As much as your life may feel like a soap opera, this part is not easy like in the soaps. You have to plan, communicate and schedule, if necessary. They even suggested coming up with a "secret code" with your husband so you would know when to expect it and you could adequately prepare. And by prepare, they meant mentally as well as physically. Preparing mentally could mean clearing off your to-do list so you wouldn't be running lists in your mind when it was your time as a couple, getting rid of anger about the trash not being taken out or reminding yourself of all the "good old days" when you were a newlywed (you know, those things that would make your heart beat faster and your palms sweat). Preparing physically could be taking a shower (we all know what a luxury those are with a newborn), tidying the bedroom, or wearing a nice outfit that makes you feel good about yourself.

What's a "secret code", you ask? It's something between you and your partner that indicates the other is interested in physical affection. It could be a text message with a special phrase. It could be a certain candle that is lit when you come home from work. I've even heard of a husband who brings his wife her favorite Starbucks drink as their special signal. You may laugh, but it works and they've been married a long time. The idea is that it is a signal you both know and so you both can prepare, mentally and physically, for whatever your agreed upon time and place is.

As ridiculous as all of this may sound, it's helped a lot of couples get through those rough early years with their babies with their relationship still intact.

Here at Cotton Babies, we assume nothing about our customers. This post is about my (Heather's) personal experiences. We realize every relationship is different and we respect those differences.

As you think about your Valentine, how do you manage to keep your relationship healthy through the early years of parenthood? Do you have a secret code that you want to share? Tell us your tips for keeping a lasting relationship with your partner (please keep it PG-13).

Cloth Diapers 201: Help! My diapers stink!

A question we get frequently in our customer service e-mail and phone calls is how to get rid of "stink" in cloth diapers. Keep in mind that as your little one's diet changes, their output changes. Sometimes this means that a laundry routine that has been working well for you suddenly seems like it's not working.

If you experience stink issues that you haven't had before, one of our first questions is, "Have you changed something in your laundry routine?" What we have learned over the years here at Cotton Babies that not every detergent works well for every customer, which is why we offer a variety of cloth diaper safe detergents for purchase. Factors such as water hardness or skin sensitivities can mean that your best friend's go to detergent or the "it" detergent of the moment may not work well for you.

One common reason for sudden stink is a change in detergent. Unfortunately, the best way to find a detergent that works for you is trial and error. We recommend trying a small package or sample size of a detergent to make sure it works well for you and your little one before committing to the value size.

If you haven't changed your detergent, our next question is, "What is your laundry routine?" Another common issue, especially with newer high efficiency machines, is that your diapers aren't being rinsed enough to remove all the urine or all the detergent.

If you are having "stink issues" we recommend changing to the following routine:
Wash a full cold wash/cold rinse cycle with recommended amount of detergent.
Wash a full hot wash/cold rinse cycle with recommended amount of detergent.
Run a second cold rinse cycle.

If this is your routine, you have a high efficiency machine and your diapers still smell, we recommend this little tip. To 'trick' a high efficiency machine into adding more water to your laundry cycles, try adding a wet towel (or two if they are small) to the beginning of your wash routine. Let the towel go through the entire laundry routine to make sure the machine adds the most water possible to every cycle.

If you are still having odors after trying these basic troubleshooting methods, give our customer service team a call at 1-888-332-2243. We can talk you through your laundry routine and give you some tips specific to your routine and little one's needs. We want your laundering routine and cloth diapering journey to be successful. We'll be glad to help you find the products and routine to ensure your success.
