Snow makes me love cloth even more...

Everyone that knows me knows of my love for cloth diapers. As much as I love CDing I sometimes forget the everyday benefits.

For example, this is what I woke up to this morning:

The Baltimore area received around 10 inches of snow between yesterday afternoon and this morning. My car is covered, my sidewalk is covered and the snowplows did only a mediocre job on my street.

The good news is that I have plenty of food and DIAPERS! I never have to worry about being snowed in and running out of diapers or wipes! If I were to run out (which is highly doubtful!) I could just throw them in the wash and be set! I forgot how AWESOME that is! I was scrolling through Facebook this morning and noticed that a number of fellow moms were worried about how they would get to the store to buy more disposable diapers and wipes. Not me! I have a nice fresh stack of fluff waiting for us.

What do you love most about cloth diapering? Is it convenience? cuteness? money savings? environmental friendliness?

Real Mom Talk: Online Interactions

I'll admit, I'm a nerd. My background is in communications and journalism, after working in a newsroom, it was hard to become a stay-at-home mom. As a result, during my years as a stay at home mom, I spent a lot of time online - reading, writing and communicating. So when I read Jeff Pearlman's article, "Tracking down my online haters" a few days ago, I went through a series of responses - understanding, surprise and shame.

I understood, because in my years in the newsroom, I learned how differently people behave when they are interacting with a machine versus a person. One of my early jobs was to translate messages from the Op-Ed phone line into "Letters to the Editor." It was eye opening, and not in a good way, to hear the things people say when they are passionate about a subject. It was shocking to see how much uglier it was when they were shielded by anonymity.

I was surprised by the level of hatred towards a sports writer. I've spent years interacting with women, especially pregnant, nursing, sleep-deprived new mamas online. I know how passionate they can be about their parenting beliefs. What surprised me was that this article was about men, exhibiting this extreme passion about sports.

And then I became ashamed. I won't lie, I've been on both sides of the online hate equation. During my more sleep deprived, hormonal, nothing-going-my-way seasons of life my fingers were sharp and quick to lash out at those who didn't agree with me. I've had to make a few online, public apologies before. I've definitely learned those lessons the hard way. It's easy to click 'post', sometimes easier than pushing backspace.
"It's about consequences, and not suffering from any," says Jacqueline Whitmore, an etiquette expert and founder of etiquetteexpert.com. "There are absolutely no repercussions to writing a nasty comment or e-mail, so people feel they can vent at will. They never think that the person receiving the message might be a real human being."
Howard Bryant, an ESPN writer says in the article:
It's the kick-the-dog syndrome. People believe no one's listening; they think we're not people, they think there are these giant monoliths controlling thought. Then when they realize someone is listening, they rediscover their manners.
I have to agree with Bryant's statement. I know when I was at my worst online was when I felt the most powerless in my real life, my babes were little, my house was a wreck and I felt like a failure in multiple areas of my life. I never took the time to really think about how what I wrote would affect the recipient as they read from their screen. I never considered they might have been up all night with a nursing babe, having a rough patch in their marriage or other things not going well in their life. I never paused to think my words might be one more thing on their "crummy day" list. Though it was never my intent, I know that was the end result more than once.

What do you think of Pearlman's article? Have you been on either side of the online hate equation? What is your process before hitting 'post' in response to a touchy subject online?

New Baby! New Beginning!

We just had our second baby Monday morning! No name yet! He weighed 7 lb 4 oz and was born in the water, assisted by my midwife partner (I'm also a midwife). Beginning this new journey with new knowledge of fun baby and mama products is super exciting! I hope to share some of my experiences with you. Postings are going to be sporatic with a new baby but I think I'll actually have more time during my babymoon than I normally do! He sleeps a lot right now, and I know, I should be too!

The first thing you need after giving birth is Mama Pads! I've been using Glad Rags for years now, but after taking off 10 months for a pregnancy and using the paper ones in the hospital, I'm glad to be back to cloth pads!

When your bottom is sore and needs extra TLC, I can't imagine using the paper, itchy, sticky pads. Cloth pads are much gentler and softer. And prettier! Think of it as pampering yourself too! You've got these adorable diapers for your baby's bottom; why not have fun stuff for yourself!

Glad Rags come in fun patterns and prints. Plus they're stuffable so you can add extra absorbancy or decrease how thick they are, depending on your flow. They come in Pantiliners, Day Pads, and Night Pads. The Night Pads are extra long and wide and allow for more absorbancy - perfect for postpartum! The pads also come in 1 packs or 3 packs. http://www.earthangelsdiaperco.com/clothdiapers_9/For-Mama.htm

We also carry FuzziBunz Comfort Pads. They have a PUL daisy-print backing and a soft fleece liner.

http://www.earthangelsdiaperco.com/diapering_347/Fuzzi-Bunz-Comfort-Pads.htm

And then, think of all the money you'll save! These aren't newborn diapers that you'll grow out of and never need again! You will likely use these (and love them!) for years to come! Never send someone to the store in the middle of the night to buy you more pads or tampons!

How to wash: Well now, I just throw them in with my diapers! Pre-husband and child, I used them too and would wash them separately. They recommend soaking them to prevent staining. But since I got married, I didnt think my husband wanted to walk into the bathroom and see a bowl of soaking pads! So I stopped soaking them. They might be a little stained, but they're dark and it doesn't bother me anyway! You can either wash them separately or with your dark laundry. Never had anything get ruined because of it.

Post here if you use cloth pads and what you like about them!

Upcoming posts - newborn cloth diapers, breastfeeding, newborn support group!

Real Mom Talk: When Delivery Doesn't Go As Planned

One of the great joys of pregnancy is envisioning a beautiful, perfect delivery day. We plan those first moments when we meet our new baby as our family lovingly gathers around.

Maybe you wrote out your birth plan, carried it dutifully to your final doctor's or midwife appointments, and made sure you had extra copies for all the nurses, doulas and attendants by your side for delivery. But life doesn't always go as planned.

Personally, I've had three pregnancies, resulting in four children. The brief version goes like this: singleton, twins, singleton; vaginal delivery, vaginal delivery, c-section, VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). You do the math... there's one definitely not as planned delivery in there. Actually only one of my deliveries went even close to my plan.

I'll spare you the gory details, but my twin pregnancy resulted in what my obstetrician called "the delivery from hell". No joke, she actually said those words to me the day after my sons were born.

So what's a mom to do when delivery plans change in the middle of delivery? It may seem a little oversimplified but I'd say, have a baby by whatever means necessary. Most of us who have deliveries that don't go exactly as planned, no matter the changes, we still have a healthy baby once it's all said and done. Unfortunately, even with the amazing knowledge and technology we have today, not every family experiences a happy ending.

I recall a conversation with a friend a few years ago. I expressed how unhappy and uncomfortable I was about my two scars- one from a c-section, one from thyroid surgery. She shared with me wisdom her grandmother had bestowed upon her. I can't recall the exact words, but the message was "Every scar on my body represents a time my life or my child's life was saved." Her words pierced my heart and forever changed how I feel about those (now fading) scars. I could be unhappy about the process, or I could choose to be thankful for medical professionals that did their jobs.

Sure, I recall the scary moments from delivery. I still have the photos of my son, 24 hours old, black and blue from his complicated delivery. He's healthy today, all four of them are amazing, healthy children. Of course, I share my experiences with other moms when they ask. I tell them what I would have done differently. I share the things I know now that I wish I had known before. But most importantly, I choose to be thankful, no matter the process, that I can hold my children in my arms.

Did your delivery go as planned? If not, how did you deal with the feelings that follow an unexpected delivery? Share your story with us.

Cloth Diapers 101: How do you wash cloth diapers?

Ahh, a topic all cloth diapering parents have to learn at some point in their cloth diapering journey. Yes, cloth diapers do take a little more effort than some other types of laundry, but the extra TLC (tender loving care) can help your cloth diapers reach their full potential.

Think of it this way, if you spent $100 (or more) on a pair of jeans that you wanted to wear every other day for two (or more) years, you would follow the manufacturer's suggested care to give them the longest life possible, right? Cloth diapers are much the same.

For bumGenius, Flip and Econobum diapers, we recommend the following basic routine:
  • As you would with the rest of your laundry, separate your diapers into like materials. Wash natural fibers separately from synthetics.
  • Wash the entire load on cold with a laundry detergent recommended for cloth diapers. Washing once on cold water is important to remove leftover "yuck" from your diapers.
  • Wash the entire load again on warm or hot (100F/40C) - also with detergent. We do NOT recommend the sanitize cycle, as it is too hot.
  • Do a second rinse.
  • We recommend that you line dry your diaper covers, pocket diapers and anything made with hook & loop closures. Inserts and prefolds can be tumble dried on a medium heat setting.
I hear you asking, "But what detergents are recommended for cloth diapers?" Generally speaking, you want a detergent without brighteners, scents, dyes or fabric softeners. You can read more about these additives in Jenn's post Good Detergent / Bad Detergent. Want to save time and skip the research?

Please keep in mind that each type of cloth diaper may vary sightly in their recommended laundry routines, so please read the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Keep them handy, because as your child ages, expands their diet (as well as their output), your laundry routine may need to be altered slightly.

As always, if you are having trouble finding the laundry detergent or routine for to fit your needs, give us a call at 1-888-33-BABIES (1-888-332-2243) and we'd be glad to help you find a solution that works for you.

This Just In: Phil & Ted's Lobster High Chair

I'm sure I'm not the only parent who has ever cringed at the sight of the high chairs available at my local restaurants. Let's face it, a baby wipe is certainly not going to cut it when it comes to that level of dried food grime.

At Cotton Babies, we really love the Phil&Ted's Metoo high chair. It is great because it allows your child to sit at the table with the rest of the family and eliminates the need to use the often dirty high chairs in restaurants. But, we've been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the newest high chair in the Phil&Ted's line, the Lobster High Chair.

Amy, our Cotton Babies' buyer, was really excited as she shared with me the improvements that Phil&Ted's has added to their popular clamping high chair to make the Lobster better than ever.

The Lobster's upgrades include:
  • A five-point harness for securing baby.
  • Pincer-like clamps with rubber trim that protect the table while gripping it securely.
  • Full size handle grips for tightening the clamps to the table.
  • Dishwasher safe, removable food tray.
  • A carry bag, to keep lobster in its shell when not in use.
  • Padded seat, which is easy to wipe clean and machine washable.
Weighing just under 4 lbs, the lobster might be lighter than your diaper bag! It is extremely travel-friendly, making it convenient to take to restaurants, on family vacations or to grandma's house.

Curious about the ways you could use a Phil&Ted's Lobster high chair? Check out this fun video:

The Lobster is available in two color combinations for $79.99 with Cotton Babies' free economy shipping. While supplies last.

Real Mom Talk: Indoor Winter Entertainment

Months ago, when we first asked for topics you wanted us to discuss in our Real Mom Talk series indoor winter entertainment was one of the requested topics. Your winters may be long or short, depending on where you live. Regardless of geography or weather, there are occasions where you may be stuck indoors for longer than you (or your children) like. During pregnancy through the toddler and preschool stages, it seems indoor days are more frequent than at other stages of life.

Here are a few of my favorite indoor activities that don't require anything more than a quick search around your house and a little time investment.

Blanket forts - An all time favorite game full of imagination. Create a "fort" for you and your little one to play in together by using a piece or two of furniture and some large fabric you have around the house (blankets, tablecloths, sleeping bags, etc.). Don't forget to drag your favorite toys under the tent to play!

Dance party - Turn up some music and dance your rainy day blues away. Invent new dance moves, burn some energy and improve your mood in just a few minutes.

Food painting - No need to get too fancy for this one. Grab some colorful items from your fridge or pantry and drop a few spoonfuls on the highchair or a tray to let your little one fingerpaint with. Some food suggestions: ketchup, yogurt, pureed baby foods, etc. Keep in mind, this is safe for children who are eating regular foods. Be sure to read labels carefully if your little one is still learning foods.

Rice play - This is for one is for older toddlers. Fill a container with dry, uncooked rice and let your little one dig, scoop, shovel and pour sandbox-style. I learned this one from a librarian when my oldest child was nearly two years old, which leads me to my last recommendation.

Library field trip - the library is a great resource year round. Many parents don't realize how many resources the library has for little ones. Many have story times specifically geared towards 1 and 2 year olds. In addition to great books, libraries also have videos, audio books, games and puzzles available for checkout. The library is a great get away and change of scenery for the whole family, don't forget to pick up a book for yourself!

Most of my favorite indoor activity suggestions came from other parents who had been there, done that. So to finish out, I've included a few of my favorite responses from yesterday's snow day post to share.

Emily from Texas said,
"We love making "edible snowflakes" from tortillas (warmed briefly to make pliable, folded into 1/4s and then cut like a paper snowflake), brush them with cooking oil, sprinkle with powdered sugar and toast in the toaster for a few minutes until crunchy."
BnfJess said,
"We like to pull out the play doh and make fun creatures. Board games(a thing of the past with so many video games now) is one of our favorite things to do. Candy Land is my three years olds favorite right now. He refers to it as the pretty game. :O) "
April said,

"Love making s'mores and reading classics like Little House on the Prarie or Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates. It is isn't raining to hard I love going to the Nelson Atkins art gallery. Kids love the Egyptian exhibit."
Crystal said,

"Our new favorite activity is having a "beach party". We crank up the fire place and put on our swim suits, have a picnic in the living room, and eat ice cream. No better way to beat the long Montana winter blues than, pretending it's not happening. :-) "
MegaP in Florida said,

"Favorite activities for us are board games, reading books to our little ones and telling stories. It's always fun to hear what a 5 year old can come up with! Best part? They don't require power :)"
How do you keep busy indoors during the long winter days? What tips have you received from other moms that have now become your favorites? Share your indoor entertainment tips with us.

Cloth Diapers 101: Why Are My Cloth Diapers Leaking?

We've had many customers asking about leaks recently. Jenn wrote this article more than a year ago. Since many have asked and we know we have new customers, we decided to bring it out again to share with you, in case you missed it the first time.

There can be many causes of leaks… I get phone calls all the time from mommies who are frustrated because of this issue. It can be hard to troubleshoot a leak, especially when you are new to cloth diapering. So here are a few tips from a momma who has been there, done that and was awarded the wet t-shirt to prove it.

First of all, make sure that you washed everything before using. There can be residue left on the fabric from the production process that can cause leakage. Also, if you choose to use diaper creams or lotions be sure to use a barrier like a stay-dry liner or a piece of fleece between the baby's bottom and the diaper. Wash the liners or fleece separately from your diapers so that the oils do not transfer to the diapers in the wash. Diaper creams directly on the diapers will cause them to leak.

Then, figure out where the leak is coming from.

If the diaper is leaking out the top, make sure that the insert isn’t pushing the lining fabric up against your baby’s clothing. That will cause the diaper to wick moisture up and out of the top. The top edge of the diaper should be flat against your baby with the soft fabric against your baby’s skin.

If the diaper is leaking out the side of the legs, change the diaper and remove the insert. If it is saturated then your baby just pee’d alot and either needs something more absorbent or a more frequent diaper change. If it isn’t saturated, then you either have a fit issue or a repelling issue.

To observe fit, pick up your baby’s legs after putting the diaper on and observe how it fits around the bottom of their bottom. Is it snug? If so, good. However, if you can see “air” between the diaper and their skin, then you need to refine the fit somehow. With bumGenius that might mean trying a different snap setting or fastening the tabs tighter.

If the diaper is leaking out the back, make sure that the insert is tucked in completely. If the insert is sticking out the top of the diaper, it will wick moisture onto your baby’s clothing. We also occasionally see leaks up the back with little girls who are pee’ing buckets at a time and with little boys who are aimed off to the side of the insert.

Finally, remember to be patient.

Good luck with your diapers!! If you have further questions, you can always call 1-888-33-BABIES (1-888-332-2243) and we’ll be glad to help.

Looking for a beautiful, yet practical, baby gift? This week at Cotton Babies, some exciting new styles of our popular Robeez soft-soled baby shoes. Cotton Babies staff love the way Robeez cling to feet with the elasticized ankle band and are easy to wash by hand or in a machine.

Connie, grandmother and a Cotton Babies customer, said:
I have used Robeez shoes on both my grandsons and they are the best. They are easy to put on and always stay on. They are soft and comfy... The flexible sole is nice for prewalkers.

Keep little feet warm and entertained with these fun, new designs inspired by a beloved children's book. The Eric Carle gift sets come in navy with Mr. Carle's iconic hungry caterpillar or in fuschia with a butterfly. Each set comes in a beautifully decorated box with a miniature Eric Carle board book. A perfect gift, no wrapping required.

Another great addition to our Robeez collection are these great reversible shoes. With two designs with a reversible style, it's almost like getting two pairs for the price of one! The Executive Surfer Tan shoes would be perfect for a day on the beach on the tan side. Flip to the navy leather side to dress them up for your baby's little board meetings.

The Little Prince Blue can coordinate with blue or brown outfits or give everyone a head's up to your little one's mood with a quick switch of the shoe.

Robeez designs have seasonal availability, so don't let these great new styles hop out of our warehouse before you snag a pair! Already own a pair? Share your thoughts with a Cotton Babies review and help future shoppers.

Jenn's Thoughts: Pooping Day?

Do we have any poop experts who read this blog? If so, I need your help.

We have pooping day in our house. It's usually a day that we pick Elsie up from the babysitter and find out that she productively filled four diapers that day. Every single child will go at least once, maybe twice, and almost always during dinner. Sometimes, Jimmy and I will have a moment of shared hilarity when the last child finally yells for help wiping their bottom. Other times, like today, it's not so funny. I'm ready to call the pediatrician and ask her what causes pooping day to happen. We don't feed them a diet of straight whole wheat bread, broccoli and oatmeal. My kids eat their fair share of non-fibrous, perfectly constipating junk. What in the world causes that volume of poop to happen... all at once? Is it phases of the moon? Do your kids do this?

Thirsties BRAND NEW Duo Fab Fitted!

We've been waiting a LONG time for these diapers to make their debut and now they're here!

Thirsties has developed the Duo - 2 size system which I love! Most one-size diapers truly don't fit a newborn or a potty-trainer. So Thirsties developed a 2 size system; Size One starts at 6 pounds - truly a newborn, unlike One-Size diapers which start around 8 pounds. Size Two is 18-40 lbs. Most children are potty-trained by then!

So, introducing the Duo Fab Fitted! A 2 size fitted that works superbly with the 2 size Duo Wrap, or Thirsties original cover. Plus the colors coordinate with the Duo Wraps and are adorable! Don't even want to cover those up!

Super Absorbancy! These fitteds hold up to 18 oz of fluid! That's 7 times their weight! Great for even a heavy wetter.

The Duo Fitted has a sleeve design for extra stuffing if necessary and faster drying.

And it's available in 6 adorable colors and Velcro or Snaps!

Real Mom Talk: I Failed Cloth Diapering

Confession time: I failed cloth diapering... at least my first attempt that is.

When my twins were newborns, money was tight, really tight. During an online search, I was introduced to the idea of cloth diapering. Hours of internet research later, I knew this was what was going to save my family's budget. I shared with my husband, who was indifferent to the idea, but definitely wasn't willing to invest the hundreds of dollars required for start up. I devised a brilliant idea to eBay off some extra stuff around the house to make enough to buy a few start up diapers, then slowly between clearing out my house and the money I'd save on disposables, I would work up to a full stash. Surely, after seeing them in use my husband would change his mind like all those other husbands I'd read about online.

I stalked eBay for hours watching a waiting for the "it" WAHM (work at home mom) cloth diaper of that time to post a lot of diapers that I could afford. Finally I found my magic lot, two yellow outside, dark grey fleece inner, seconds quality cloth diapers. Because it was the wee hours of the morning, I managed to snag the deal before anyone else could bid it above the balance in my PayPal account. They were ugly, but they were mine and they would save my family budget!

I couldn't wait for my package to arrive. I followed the prepping instructions perfectly and put them on the boys... who promptly peed in them 10 minutes later. So then I had to wash them. Let me clue you in to something here, doing the whole laundry process for two diapers is ridiculous. My husband was irritated at how much time it took and I quickly became discouraged.

No one I knew cloth diapered, I was going it alone, except for help from other moms online. I had too few diapers to make it a success and there were no stores to visit for help or product. Keep in mind, my twins are now 6 years old, bumGenius just turned 5 last month. The cloth diapering world was a much different place than it is now.

A few years passed, the cloth diapering world grew, my family moved to a new city and I had another child. A child that I was able to successfully cloth diaper, thanks to a network of moms who I could call on, a local store that I could visit and amazing new products that had recently been invented.

So why did I write this as the first Real Mom Talk of the year? To give you hope. Cloth diapering is a parenting choice, much like breastmilk or formula, co-sleeping or a crib, baby wearing or a stroller. Parenting choices can be difficult and may require investments of time, effort and sometimes money.

As we think about making positive changes for our families for the coming year, remember to take it one small step at a time. If you feel like giving up, find support. If, after giving it your best, it's just not working out, sometimes you have to let it go. If you choose let it go, don't allow guilt to creep in and steal the joy of just being a parent. Only you can know what's best for your family.

Have you ever tried to make a positive change for yourself or your family and failed? Did you ever try again and find success on the second or third try? Share your story with me.

New Year, New You, New Diapers

Happy 2011 from the Cotton Babies team! New year inspires fresh beginnings and lots of promise. Every year our Cotton Babies team spends the first work day of the new year the same way, with inventory day. We spent the day counting, cleaning and organizing the warehouse to give a fresh start to the new year.

The new year also brings thought of the much debated New Year's resolution. Do you make resolutions? What are you hoping to change this year? Are you working on changing old habits or establishing new better habits?

Yesterday, Jenn shared this in the Cotton Babies e-mail:
Working on a healthier you?
This morning I pulled my Belly Bandit Mother Tucker (sigh) out of my drawer and pulled up "LoseIt" on my iPhone. Time to start counting calories, working out and working towards a firmer me. Are you working on it too? LoseIt even has a community on their website. Let's work towards our goal together! There's nothing quite like having some friends helping you get healthier!
During inventory yesterday a bonus box of "giveaway diapers" was found! So here's the deal, share with us the changes you are working on to make 2011 even better than 2010, and I'll randomly draw some winners to each receive a bumGenius 4.0 in a "bright" color. A bright start to the new year with a bright cloth diaper!

Eligible entries must be posted today, Tuesday, January 4, 2011. U.S. Residents only. Void where prohibited by law. No purchase necessary to win. Winners will be notified via e-mail.
