Fluff in the Spotlight: Happy Heiny's OneSize Diaper

Happy Heiny's OneSize Diapers are this week's Fluff in the Spotlight! Haven't ever tried one? Well you should! These fabulous diapers are luxuriously soft and made to fit baby from birth to potty training, from aprroximately 8-35lbs! They're available in Snaps or Aplix and are even available in a Mini size for preemies!

Happy Heiny's uses only high quality materials in the production of their diapers AND their custom milled fleece is so soft your baby is sure to love it!

Happy Heiny's diapers are also available in over 22 colors and several adorable prints! Their prints are now ALL polyester laminate so you no longer have to worry about your print diapers wicking, now they'll function exactly the same as your solid colored diapers.

Each onesize diaper comes with TWO free microfiber inserts, one small & one large. For newborns you may only the need the small and for toddlers you can use either the large insert or both inserts for added protection such as overnight or on long car rides, etc.

My personal experiene with Happy Heinys has left me very satisfied and I find their diapers to be more generously sized then some of the other OS diapers on the market. So if you're finding that your baby is on the largest setting of your current diaper you may just want to give a HH Onesize a try, I think you'll find that you'll have more room to grow.

Stay tuned this week as we focus on more Happy Heiny's diapers that you might need the scoop on!

Just Julie: I burnt the cheesecake...and other Thanksgiving thoughts!

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope everyone has a great day filled with lots of yummy food, family and friends. We're going over to my brother-in-laws house to spend the holiday with his family and I am honestly looking forward to having someone cook for us for a change. Also, they have young kids so we can relax and let the kids play without having to worry about child-proofing, etc.

I'm responsible for the cheesecake. I made one last night and burnt it! I really almost cried and would die of embarrassment if we brought a burnt cheesecake to the dinner. I can just picture everyone's faces as they bite into the cheesecake, assuring me it's "mmm, yummy" when in fact they're thinking ewww, this tastes burnt...and being able to tell by the way they're chewing that they don't really like it.

I was seriosuly bummed. If you knew our family you'd know that my cheesecake is like the MAIN desert, it always turns out awesome and costs a small fortune to make, there's no way I'd bring a burnt one. So, after much late night distress my husband went out to the store to buy me some more last minute ingredients so that I can try to redeem myself this morning by baking another one...wish me luck!

The weather man has promised us a day in the 70's, hopefully some in the 60's, and we're much looking forward to the cool crisp air. It just doesn't feel like the holidays when we're sitting here in the 90 degree heat.

I have much to be thankful for, mine and my families health, our home, my beautiful children, and my hard-working and loving husband. I am also so thankful for cloth diapers. Thankful that such creative wahms exist who invented today's modern diapers. Thankful that I discovered them and began my business. Thankful for all the wonderful wahms and customers I've connected with online. Thankful for my Blog and all it's readers.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

My Review of the New Duo Diaper from Thirsties

It was my pleasure to review the New Duo Diaper provided to me by Thirsties! From the moment they announced it's upcoming release I knew it was going to be a great diaper and I was ecstatic to get to try it out before my sons are completely potty trained.
When the diaper arrived I was so happy to see such a high quality insert. The Hemp Jersey is amazingly soft and trim and combined with the two layers of microfiber that you snap on top this diaper is sure to become a fast fan favorite!

Also, the front and back pocket openings are generously sized and very stretchy, making them super easy to reach into and position the insert, it's easy to see how it will agitate out of the diaper during the wash cycle. We all know that removing soiled inserts from diapers before laundry is one of the dirtiest deeds, especially when the insert has slipped down and you have to reach in to remove it.

So, how did the diaper work when we put it to the test? Well since my sons are potty training I knew that they'd put it to the test if I left it on them long enough to pee in. I put the diaper on Spencer, he's 34lbs and 3yrs old. I put him down to nap in it but he woke up dry. I left it on while we went out to run an errand and when we returned I felt him and could tell he had peed by the weight and feel of the diaper.

I took it off and it felt super heavy but hadn't wicked through anywhere, and this is especially unique because he had been in his carseat and usually the compression would have caused wicking if the diaper was full. It felt super heavy so I decided to take it's weight!
Almost 15 oz is quite a lot of weight and it honestly looked like it could have held quite a bit more. I took the diaper to the laundry and although it's not necessary, I wanted to take out the wet inserts to inspect it. I couldn't believe all that weight was being held by such a trim diapering system.

Something else to consider is that I had only prepped/pre-washed the insert twice so it's absorbing qualities will definitely continue to improve with more washing.

As for the fit!? It fits great as you can see in the photos below. When compared to a Duo Wrap in Size 2 it looks like an exact match. If you've found the Sz 2 Duo Wrap to be a tight fit on your babe or toddler you should consider that because you do not wear a bulky fitted or prefold underneath the Duo Diaper it is a much more generous fit than a Size 2 Duo Wrap and I would suggest you give it a try!

Fluff in the Spotlight: Thirsties NEW Duo Diapers

I am super excited about this week's Fluff in the Spotlight!
It's the brand spanking new Duo Diaper by Thirsties! It's not often that a diaper comes along and just knocks your socks off, and boy this fab new diaper did just that! Tomorrow's post will feature my own personal review of the Duo Diaper, this post will focus on it's features and what makes it so special!

The Duo Diaper is available in TWO sizes:
Size One
6-18 lbs (3-8 kg) 0-9 months
Size Two
18-40 lbs (8-18 kg) 9-36+ months

Features:

· A two-piece diapering system combining an absorbent insert and a waterproof sleeve diaper

· An adjustable rise for extended use to suit your growing baby

· Just Two sizes will fit from birth-to-potty

· Thirsties Famous Leg gussets provide superior protection against leaks

· Pliable and breathable in 8 fun colors!

· Sleeve design for easy stuffing & easy cleaning

· Microfiber terry & hemp combo insert for optimal absorption; 7 layers in all!

· Using the Duo Diaper from birth-to-potty and you could save $1400 over disposables!
Similar in feel and fit
as the best selling Duo Wrap, Thirsties® Duo Diapers are completely waterproof yet remain breathable, pliable, and very comfortable for your baby’s delicate skin. The ultra-soft microfleece liner on the inside protects baby’s skin from wetness and also resists staining. Our handy sleeve design features openings on both sides of the diaper between the microfleece and waterproof layer. The duo openings featured in Thirsties® Duo Diaper enable easy insert stuffing from either side of the diaper and also make for easy cleaning. There is no need to remove the soiled inserts when washing -- your hands will remain clean! Simply toss your soiled Thirsties® Duo Diaper in the laundry and the inserts will agitate free from the diaper in the washing machine.

What about the Duo inserts?

Thirsties Duo inserts

are AMAAAAAAZING! One insert consisting of 2 layers of serged microfiber terry snap on top another insert made of 5 layers of serged Hemp Jersey! These inserts combined mean that this diaper is capable of holding the mother load!

AND....Did you know that Thirsties' new hemp jersey is like no other on the market!?! Thirsties found a knitter right here in the USA to custom knit the hemp textile to thier own specifications. You will find this hemp is thicker, softer, and holds-up better than any other on the market.

The Cloth Diaper Geek Explains it all! The 411 on Disposable Liners

Question: I see moms talk about using disposable liners and I wonder what they are? How do they work and why should I give them a try?

The Geek's Answer: Thanks for asking! The term "liner" can be confusing, especially since so many diapers have "lining" which is usually a stay dry fabric like microfleece or suedecloth. But a Disposable Liner is something different all together.

Disposable and/or Biodegradable Flushable Liners consist are dry-weave for comfort, they are soft and much resemble a piece of tissue paper only stronger like a fabric. They allow moisture to pass through into the diaper's absorbent core and they "catch" the solid waste keeping the diaper and it's built in lining from getting really soiled. They make diaper laundry much easier and shaking the poo into the toilet is as easy as grabbing the liner and pulling it off, the poo and all, and throwing into the toilet. Flush...and tada! That's all there is to it.

Since they are 100% Biodegradable you don't have to worry about throwing them in the garbage, they can be safely flushed away with the waste, just like toilet paper.

How do you use it? Each sheet is approximately 9" x 14" and comes in a roll. You simply tear off a sheet and lay it in the diaper before fastening the diaper on the baby. There are 100 sheets per roll and for smaller babies you can even cut each sheet in half and get twice the amount of sheets per roll!

Want to try some? The first 20 people to request a sample, by posting their request in a comment to this post, will receive 5 FREE sheets/liners to try. Please make sure to leave a method of contacting you for your shipping details.

**Thanks to all who responded. The FREE Samples are now all spoken for.**

Thanks for reading! Do you have a question for The Cloth Diaper Geek? Use our Blog Contribution Form and submit yours today!

Just Julie: Remembering my very first cloth diapers!

Cloth diapering is one of those things, now a huge part of my life and lifestlyle, but not something that I ever knew that I'd like or even thought to research. When my twin sons were born my daughter was about 3.5 years old and finally potty trained. I had never used cloth on her, never considered it, no one ever recommended it, only the older women my mother and grandmothers age would joke about it. Even they had no idea what cloth was like nowadays and they REALLY were joking when they'd discuss cloth and what it was like for them.

Having twins meant that people were super excited for us. I was given a wonderful baby shower and gifted tons of disposable diapers. My husband works for the Fire Department and ALL the guys at his work pitched in money and bought us diapers. He came home one day with, no kidding, maybe six garbage bags filled with packages of disposable diapers. We had them in the first few sizes and enough to last for months and months. Five months to be exact...

Making it to 4-5 months of age without ever having to spend a dime on diapers was a huge blessing but I still couldn't get over how quickly we had gone through what seemed like thousands of diapers.

One day I told my husband that they were starting to get low, down to the last couple packs that would fit them. We were both worried about what we'd do. Since the boys birth I had been participating on a Moms of Multiples Message Board online for support and there were a handful of moms there who used cloth diapers. I saw them in their photos and was curious but up until this point really had never considered asking them about them.

Well as most of you know, cloth diapering mamas love to talk about cloth! So when I asked one of my online friends about her diapers and how they worked she was super excited to help me get started. She explained all the different kinds and also happened to have a HUGE personal stash for her twin daughters. In fact, she had some she was selling used online so she offered me a deal so that I could give them a try.

I don't remember exactly, I think I got 5 diapers total; a Medium Fuzzi Bunz, a couple Mommy's Touch OneSize, and a couple Wonderworks OneSize from her, she also sent them with some used micro inserts. These were cared for nicely but after having given brand new diapers a try I can look back and realize just how worn in they were.

I remember tearing open the package when they came in the mail and washing them right away so that I could try them. Putting them on the boys only to have them pee in them almost immediately so I had to change into the next one. Then within about 3 hours, between poops and pees, I ran plum out of cloth diapers!

Dang! I thought. Then I toook them back into the laundry room and washed them again. By betime I had pretty much gone through those 5 diapers AGAIN! The rest is history, I was totally addicted. I knew I couldn't be doing diaper laundry 5 times a day just so they could wear cloth, so hubby gave me a budget and I purchased some more diapers little by little until I had enough to get us though about 24-36 hours before having to wash.

It really was NO time at all before I was obsessed with them and decided that is what I wanted to do, start a business and sell cloth diapers online. And....here I sit at 7am in the morning writing about cloth diapers when I should be getting my daughter up for school!

Another Great Mothering.com Article: The ABC's of Going Cloth

Mothering.com has got some fabulous articles that I think you should check out. One such article is The ABC's of Going Cloth by Elizabeth Gawlik. In her article Elizabeth goes over, in detail, the different reasons why she chose to use cloth and she goes on to explain ALL the different kinds of diapers available.

Elizabeth states
When I decided to use cloth diapers, I had no idea how many choices were out there. I just went to the largest baby store in town and looked at the few options they had. Only later did I discover the smorgasbord of clothdiapering products available via the Internet.

She defines Contours, Pre-folds, Fitteds, AIO's, Pocket Diapers, Swim Diapers, Training Pants as well as ll the various types of cloth diaper covers available on the market today.

Now that you’ve been introduced to the world of cloth diapers, what’s stopping you? Go do some exploring and shopping. Even if you decide to use cloth only at home and stick with disposables for trips and outings, you’ll be doing your pocketbook, your baby, and your planet a big favor.

I suggest you head on over to Mothering and check out this great article. It's a quick read and when you're done you'll feel armed with all the knowledge you need to get started with cloth diapers asap!

Honoring Veteran's Day

My wonderful husband reminded me today of this beautiful song we love by John Gorka , it's perfect for Veteran's Day.

"Let Them In was made into song by John Gorka from a poem found in a hospital in the Philippines during World War II. The nurse that found the poem kept it all these years until the recent war brought out all the memorabilia. Luckily, her daughter sent a copy to John."

Let them in, Peter
They are very tired
Give them couches where the angels sleep
And light those fires

Let them wake whole again
To brand new dawns
Fired by the sun not wartime's
Bloody guns

May their peace be deep
Remember where the broken bodies lie
God knows how young they were
To have to die
God knows how young they were
To have to die

So give them things they like
Let them make some noise
Give dance hall bands not golden harps
To these our boys

And let them love, Peter
For they've had no time
They should have trees and bird songs
And hills to climb

The taste of summer in a ripened pear
And girls sweet as meadow wind
With flowing hair

And tell them how they are missed
But say not to fear
It's gonna be alright
With us down here

2 Days to a Rash

Early Wednesday morning we welcomed Molly to our family.  Baby number 8 for us, she is rewriting the rules of the household already.  She is our smallest baby at 6lbs, 12oz.  My labor with her was one of my longer and harder labors, but we are recovering nicely and she is a champion sucker and has taken easily to breastfeeding.

Now all of my children have sensitive skin, so hers was really no surprise, except for how fast it showed itself.  Her second night was spent in the NICU as we tried to discern the nature of a heart arrhythmia.  Thankfully the heart arrhythmia is completely benign.  The tape they used for the tests, however, caused quite a reaction.

I thought I would share some of my thoughts on diapering a newborn, before I forget all about them again.  In bullets because most of my thoughts are brief and fleeting at this point postpartum.
  • I bought chlorine free disposeable diapers, knowing I wouldn't feel much like doing laundry for a few days after her birth.  These cost a fair bit more than generic diapers, but I figured it was worth it to keep things more chemically simple for her newborn skin.
  • The NICU we were at used Pampers diapers.  These were so heavily scented that I felt like I couldn't even smell my baby at all.  Just walking near her, all I could smell was that stupid diaper.
  • But after less than 48 hours in those two kinds of diapers, everywhere they touched her skin was angry, red, and raw.
  • So just as her little pee and poo factory was heading into full steam ahead, we switched her full time back to cloth, tossing out our expensive disposables.
  • She generated her own load of diapers in just over 24 hours.  Need to get those washed quick, before she poops on another cover!!!
  • Miss Molly likes to poop without a diaper on.  Any no matter how long I wait to start wiping her, she will poop more as soon as a wipe touches her butt.
  • One diaper change took me through over 12 wipes (I stopped counting!) prompting me to dig out my cloth wipes as well.  Most of my babies haven't tended to use this many, but some babies just seem to make a big mess every time their diaper is off.  What freedom to not have to view these kinds of changes as money lost as your baby pees on each diaper as soon as it is set under their bottom!
  • Kissaluvs Size 0 are still my absolute favorite newborn diapers, especially since Molly was so much smaller than my other kids.
  • Having a newborn around is a very special time, but no matter how many times you do it, there is always a learning curve for this particular baby.

Just Julie: My first ever NaNoWriMo!

Wow! I just have to share that I am participating in this year's NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month. It is so fun and I am so glad I am giving it a try. I was inspired to try it by a couple of my local moms group friends who are participating.

If you aren't familiar with NaNoWriMo, it is 30 days of fast and furious fiction writing! You join the site, it's free, and they motivate you to write, write, write. They have a word counter to help you keep track of how far you've gotten, forums where you can connect with other locals, and tips and tricks for writing in general.

If you can complete a 50,000 word Novel by the end of November then you're considered a winner. The prize...self satisfaction, knowing that you wrote a NOVEL! How cool would that be. Many people say "Oh, I'd like to write a book one day" but very few actually do.

Scenario: You sign up for NaNoWriMo, you write and write and you finish! You read it, let some friends read it and hey, you think it might be good enough to get published. You submit it to a publisher it and Bam! Your book's in Oprah's Book Club! (can you tell I am an optimist?) LOL

Anyways, you never know and it sure is fun to try. So far I am at about 5,000 words, only 45,000 more to go, and you know what? I actually like my story so far. It started out with me doubting I could find anything to write about and now, 5000 words in I am on a roll. Plus, somehow a dead body ended up in the story, I didn't plan it but my characters stumbled upon it, now I'm just trying to roll with it...

So, it's not to late for you to sign up. And if you need a writing buddy add me to your list! My id is geishagirrrl! Good Luck!
